College Prep: Unlocking the Power of Strong Recommendations

College Preparation: How to Request Letters of Recommendation for College Applications.

As you navigate your high school journey and prepare for the next exciting chapter of your academic and professional life, you may find yourself in need of a letter of recommendation. Whether you're applying to colleges, scholarships, or specialized programs, a well-crafted letter of recommendation can make a significant difference in showcasing your accomplishments, character, and potential.

For our current Health Scholars seeking a letter of recommendation from the Office of Community Impact, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (CEDI), we've outlined a step-by-step guide to ensure your request is as smooth and efficient as possible.

Tip #1 - Choose Your Recommenders Wisely

The most effective recommendations tend to come from individuals or programs who can vouch for your character on a personal, professional, or academic level. Consider teachers, coaches, counselors, program coordinators, mentors, or anyone who knows you well and can speak to your qualities and abilities.

Tip #2 - Prepare a Resume or Brag Sheet

Even if you know your recommender well, provide them with a Brag Sheet or Resume. Include details such as awards, personal strengths, courses you've taken with them, your GPA, extracurricular activities, and more. This helps them craft a strong and personalized letter.

  • Your accomplishments (e.g., Awards you've earned)

  • Personal strengths (e.g., Talents/Passions/Hobbies)

  • The courses you took with this teacher & your grade

  • One or two of your top attributes/characteristics with examples of how you’ve demonstrated them in class

  • Your overall GPA, test scores, and top academic accomplishments

  • Extracurricular activities or volunteer work you’ve done

  • Work/Internship experiences

  • A short blurb about your goals for the program, college, or position you’re applying for

"College is not just about sharpening your intellect. It's about shaping your character, broadening your horizons, and embracing the transformative power of education."

Tip #3 - Make it Personal, But Remain Professional

Whenever possible, request a letter of recommendation in person. If that's not feasible, reach out via email. Include information about the position or school you're applying to, submission details, your resume or brag sheet, and any pre-addressed envelopes or email addresses for submission.

Tip #4 - The Key to Success - Follow Up

A polite reminder a week or two before the due date can help ensure your letters are submitted on time. Express your gratitude and offer to provide any additional information they might need.

Tip #5 - Finishing Touches

After your recommender has completed the letter, don't forget to send a quick "Thank you" note to show your appreciation. This simple act can encourage them to act as a reference for your future applications.

Closing: You're Destined For Greatness!

As you navigate the process of requesting letters of recommendation, remember that your journey to success in the healthcare field is supported by a community that believes in you. Your letters of recommendation are not just about endorsing your abilities; they're about recognizing your potential to make a positive impact in healthcare.

Best wishes on your academic and professional pursuits, Health Scholars! We're here to support you every step of the way.
